Understanding the Social Model of Disability: How It Shapes Our Practice

The Social Model of Disability is a way of understanding disability that shifts the focus from what’s “wrong” with a person to what’s around them. It is the person’s environment that disables them. This includes the barriers, attitudes and systems that make participation in everyday life difficult. Instead of seeing disability as a personal limitation, it recognises that society often creates the obstacles that restrict people’s access, independence, and inclusion. We believe that every individual possesses inherent value, and no person should ever be viewed as a problem in need of being “fixed”.

At Contemporary Therapy Solutions, The Social Model of Disability deeply informs how we provide therapeutic support. We start by acknowledging that every person has strengths, preferences, and goals. Each person is the expert in their own life, as they live it day to day. The challenge lies in environments that aren’t designed to be flexible or inclusive. Our role as therapists is to help remove or reduce those barriers, whether they’re physical, social, or attitudinal.

In practice, this means we focus on empowerment and collaboration. We work alongside participants to build skills, confidence, and strategies that support meaningful participation in everyday life. We also advocate for change within communities and systems including encouraging workplaces, schools, and communities to adapt rather than expecting individuals to fit into rigid structures.

This commitment to the social model helps build resilience and long-term well-being. By focusing on changing systems instead of ‘fixing’ individuals, we reduce the pressure to fit into societal norms. This allows people to speak up for themselves and be active in their communities, without the need to do this perfectly. When environments are designed to support people’s needs, they can more easily follow their goals and contribute to society. Ultimately, this approach supports the basic right for everyone to live in a world designed for all, not just a few.

By embracing the social model, our therapy becomes more than just treatment – it becomes a partnership for inclusion and solution finding. We help people thrive not by “fixing” them, but by supporting them to live fully, confidently, and on their own terms. This includes living within accessible environments that recognise and respect their right to belong.
